Shelter Afrique’s 43rd AGM will consolidate the transformation agenda

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) will serve as an initial step to consolidate Shelter Afrique’s transformation journey.

Kigali: June 10, 2024 – The 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Shelter Afrique Development Bank (ShafDB), which begins tomorrow in Kigali, Rwanda, is expected to consolidate the transformation agenda of the institution.

At an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) held in October 2023 in Algiers, Algeria, shareholders approved the revised statutes of the institution, transforming the pan-African housing and urban development finance institution into a development bank dynamic.

Speaking ahead of the AGM, Shelter Afrique Development Bank Managing Director Thierno Habib Hann said this year’s AGM is crucial in redefining and reorienting the institution as it enters a new phase.

“This year’s AGM will serve as an initial step to consolidate Shelter Afrique Development Bank’s transformation journey,” Mr. Hann said.

“The transformation will align Shelter Afrique with international standards, giving it a leading position among housing financiers and placing it on an equal footing with comparable development finance institutions (DFIs). Mr Hann said.

He further noted that the transformation would enable the institution to expand its spheres of operation to include mobilization of funds for climate-resilient housing projects, women’s homeownership initiatives and women working in the construction sector, as well as SME financing, trade in the real estate sector, migrants and refugees and diaspora housing projects, among other areas of interest.

“The impact of this transformation will be reflected in concrete measures such as increasing financing and construction of housing units, and improving access to decent, sustainable and affordable housing,” said Mr. Hann.

Affordable Housing Finance Value Chain

The AGM, under the theme “Sustainable Partnerships in the Affordable Housing Finance Value Chain Sustainable Partnerships in the Affordable Housing Finance Value Chain, will bring together key stakeholders, including the shareholders of our 44 Member States, our shareholders institutional stakeholders – the African Development Bank, Africa-re, policy makers, financial institutions and development partners, to discuss and develop strategies to advance the affordable housing agenda in Africa.

“This year’s theme is important because the housing sector in Africa is closely linked to partnerships in the region, influenced by various stakeholders along the housing value chain. Understanding these dynamics is critical to meeting challenges. challenges and seize opportunities to provide affordable and sustainable housing for all,” concluded Mr. Hann.

The three-day event scheduled from June 11-13, 2024 is expected to cover an annual symposium, a ministerial roundtable, the 43rd annual general meeting and some interconnected business activities under the proceedings.
